Tips for getting around that pesky firewall can be found here: The Chonx Guide: Accessing Blocked Sites in China (I posted the entry over there because it’s Not blocked, unlike this wordpress blog)
In other news, if Facebook ever starts to work properly again, don’t forget to join the Peace Corp China Facebook group. Might be a handy place for announcing events (regional Halloween parties anyone?), details about COS and IST…
Now that WordPress has added the tag feature (different from Categories), I’ve been able to unclutter our category sidebar. Most of the categories under FAQ have been changed to tags, as well as the Theme/Topic categories under TEFL. I have also included a complete index of these tags on the FAQ and TEFL main pages (click on the tabs at the top to see them).
Hopefully the new changes will make the site more user friendly!
If you’re currently viewing this in China, then you clearly already know how to use a proxy. If you’re planning on coming to China soon, you might jot the following down now…
EDITED 7/5/08: Anonymouse goes in and out, Iphide is kaput, proxychina.org also blocked.
http://www.anonymouse.org – Allows you to view sites like Livejournal, Wikipedia, BBC, Blogger. A pesky ad floats around on each screen, but can be closed without interrupting anything.
http://www.iphide.com – Allows you to view & SIGN IN to sites. Essential if you want to leave comments or make posts in Lj. Has very annoying advertisement page that pops up every time you want to navigate to next page and you have to click “Continue Browsing” to do just that.
This link explains with pictures and English translations how to fully use Baidu.com’s mp3 download feature. Baidu has lots of great features that you may not be aware of because it’s all in 汉字 (hanzi), but this site explains it.
The site as whole, sinosplice.com, is a good blog about life in modern China. Nothing controversial at all, quite mild, interesting, and helpful. The owner and blogger is John, who is certainly familiar to all you ChinesePod users.
To create a link to another website (like to a box.net shared file download) you have two options
In rich text mode: Type the name of the link, for example, “Download here” Then highlight the text and click on the insert/edit link button (the chainlink button). Insert the web address in the box that pops up. Select “Open in new window”
In HTML mode: type
<a href=”http://the.address.here”> Name of the link (example–click/download here)</a>
Make sure to include quotation marks around the web address. If you want it to open in a new window include target=”_blank” somewhere in the first set of < >
This is primarily for the Tech Squad members who will be posting lessons and such to the site.
Formatting: You copy and pasted a lesson plan into here and it lost all of its pretty formatting. It should start in “Visual” mode which you can use to edit just like in Word. If you know some html and want to use it to tweak things a bit you can click on the “Code” tab.
Categories (Tags): When you are editing all the available categories/tags are available on the right side of the page. Just click on the ones you want. Remember to include the “tefl” category on all the teaching resources & “faq” for the faq posts, or else it will not show up with the rest of them.
New categories can be added if you find it necessary. But to maintain order please go into Dashboard (top of page)–> Manage–> Categories. Then edit the new category and select the “parent category”
The “Split Post/More tag”: Don’t let the post take up an entire page worth of space, forcing people to scroll past it. When editing the entry leave the intro or short summary, and then click on the Split Post button (in Visual mode it looks like two pieces of paper with a dotted line between them); (in Code mode it is the “More” button)
